HIGHLIGHTS OF THE ESSENTIAL Rs OF LIVING by Dr. Tony Lamair Burks II:
I - PROLOGUE:
GOD’S MINUTE
I’ve only just a minute, Only sixty seconds in it. Forced upon me, can't refuse it, Didn’t seek it, didn't choose it, But it’s up to me to use it. I must suffer if I lose it, Give an account if I abuse it, Just a tiny little minute, But eternity is in it. attributed to Rev. Dr. Benjamin Elijah Mays, President of Morehouse College (1940-1967)
II - THE ESSENTIAL Rs OF LIVING: LESSONS FROM MY GRANDPARENTS:
READ AND RESEARCH: The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. ― Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr, Nobel Laureate
RISK AND RESTORE: Beginning today, treat everyone you meet as if they were going to be dead by midnight. Extend to them all the care, kindness and understanding you can muster, and do it with no thought of any reward. Your life will never be the same again. ― Og Mandino, Writer
RESPECT AND REMEMBER: A people without the knowledge of their past history, origin, and culture are like a tree without roots. ― Marcus Garvey, Journalist and Black Nationalist
III - EPILOGUE:
You are the fairy tale told by your ancestors. ―Toba Beta, Author, My Ancestor Was an Ancient Astronaut

I AM* by Tony Lamair Burks II
I am from collard greens and cornbread.
I am from the Heart of Dixie,
the buckle of the Bible Belt.
I am from grits and catfish, bursting with flavor;
cooked with love.
I am from small town America
tutored in the lessons of the past.
I am from chitlins and curry and escargot.
I am from preachers and teachers;
domestics and doctors.
I am from old souls and new beginnings.
I am from the Land of Peanuts, where Cotton was King
and where Carver built a new empire.
I am from tree houses, go carts, plums, and figs.
I am from Corky and Pickaboo; Stevie and Cherokee.
I am from lazy Saturdays spent walking “cross town”
and early Sundays in the Amen Corner.
I am from big city USA equipped to traverse the globe.
I am from Mary and ML, Lillie and Tim,
Janice and Tony.
I am from genesis and revelations…what is
and what is to be.
