I AM* by Tony Lamair Burks II
I am from collard greens and cornbread.
I am from the Heart of Dixie,
the buckle of the Bible Belt.
I am from grits and catfish, bursting with flavor;
cooked with love.
I am from small town America
tutored in the lessons of the past.
I am from chitlins and curry and escargot.
I am from preachers and teachers;
domestics and doctors.
I am from old souls and new beginnings.
I am from the Land of Peanuts, where Cotton was King
and where Carver built a new empire.
I am from tree houses, go carts, plums, and figs.
I am from Corky and Pickaboo; Stevie and Cherokee.
I am from lazy Saturdays spent walking “cross town”
and early Sundays in the Amen Corner.
I am from big city USA equipped to traverse the globe.
I am from Mary and ML, Lillie and Tim,
Janice and Tony.
I am from genesis and revelations…what is
and what is to be.
